Carl Albert’s Conner Bates – Wrestling Spotlight – Presented by Ben Sexton Shelter Insurance

In the wrestling arena, Connor Bates of Carl Albert High School finds his inspiration and drive under the guidance of his favorite coach, Curt Hodges. “He’s pushed me the hardest and has kept the team going,” Connor said. Under Coach Hodges’ mentorship, Connor has not only honed his physical skills but also imbibed a strong sense of teamwork and perseverance.

Reflecting on the camaraderie within the team, Connor acknowledges the unwavering support of his teammates. “I’d say everyone on the team supports you,” he affirmed, highlighting the importance of a unified front in the challenging world of wrestling. The support, however, comes with its conditions – a commitment to discipline and dedication, as evidenced by meeting weight requirements and avoiding any inclination to quit.

Outside the wrestling mat, Connor credits Mrs. King from Schwartz Elementary as his favorite teacher, emphasizing her role in helping him become more outgoing and social. It’s a testament to the lasting impact educators can have beyond the classroom.

As the wrestling season approaches, Connor has diligently prepared during the off-season, focusing on lifting weights at least five times a week. This commitment reflects his dedication to physical conditioning and readiness for the challenges that lie ahead on the mat.

Wrestling, for Connor, extends beyond the physical rigors of the sport; it imparts invaluable life lessons:

“Once you wrestle, everything else seems easy.”

Among the many memories, one stands out as the ultimate highlight – winning the 5A state title last year.

“Watching all my teammates fight for their life to place was more exciting than any match I’ve wrestled,” he reminisced.’ Looking ahead to the upcoming season, Connor harbors individual aspirations: “I hope to
place at least 3rd or 2nd at a good tournament. But mostly just get better.”

Beyond high school, Connor envisions a shift to bodybuilding, with aspirations to compete. As he grapples with opponents on the mat, Connor Bates is already envisioning a future where his physical prowess takes center stage in a different arena – the bodybuilding stage.
