Alex Sutterfield Talks Titan Wrestling – Presented by Rib Crib

VYPE Magazine caught up with Alex Sutterfield to learn more about wrestling at Carl Albert High School

VYPE: Alex, what do you love most about your team and teammates?

Sutterfield: I love how close we all are. I started with the core (Isaiah, Grant, Isaac, Braden, Cason, Pakistan) my sixth and seventh grade year but they were together since joining club wrestling. They will talk about adventures and incidents they have had as they grow up together laughing about it because most of the stories were stupid choices from start to finish. They are family inside and outside. This was especially evident at a tournament right before winter break where there were a stupid amount of breaks. During those breaks we played mat-ball and messed around with each other and bonded. When there was wrestling, we were all on the floor cheering each other on which never happens with any team.

VYPE: Do you have a favorite subject in school or a favorite teacher?

Sutterfield: My favorite subject is Science. My favorite teacher was my Spanish teacher Mr. Rourke who was one of those special teachers that was funny and personal but also strict and hardworking.

VYPE: Who has been a big influence in your life, on or off the mat?

Sutterfield: Jesus. That’s my answer at church. The most influential persons are my parents. They have affected every part of my life. From making me a hard worker, to inspiring me to join wrestling (my dad was a brown belt in Judo). They have built a moral compass and guided me like no other parents on my team. Through their hard work to be amazing people they are set the standard for me.

VYPE: What does it mean to you to hear coach calling you one of the unsung heroes of the team?

Sutterfield: That means a lot to hear that from coach. However, I don’t feel like I am. Grant is a hero and our leader because of winning state and leading us in practice. Braden and Pakistan are our main jokesters that will set everybody laughing. I don’t feel like the unsung hero that coach talks about. Especially after these past few weeks where I have hit a mental barrier in my wrestling. However, that means a lot with the people around because I think coach sees something that I can’t see about how our team is still shaping and forming into a stronger family.
