Carl Albert’s Kyle Sparks
Senior Kyle Sparks has built his tennis career at Carl Albert High School on two simple ideas: work hard and be honest, whether he is swinging for a winner or calling a ball on the line.
Sparks, a boys tennis player for the Titans, said those values show up in the smallest details of a match, starting with how he handles close calls. Calling balls in and out for his opponent is a responsibility he takes seriously and sees as a direct reflection of his character. “It is something that is very important during matches and it requires that I be honest,” Sparks said.
That sense of integrity is rooted at home. Sparks credits his mom as his biggest inspiration, not because of anything flashy but because of the daily example she sets. “My mom inspires me because she works hard and always supports me,” he said. Her consistency has shaped the way he approaches both the classroom and the court.
In the classroom, Sparks gravitates toward English, where he said he enjoys the chance to think, write and communicate clearly. He points to English teacher Mr. Rourke as his favorite, noting that strong teachers make it easier to balance academics and athletics during a busy season. As a senior, he understands that what he learns in those classes will matter long after his final high school match.
On the court, Sparks said tennis has taught him lessons that go far beyond wins and losses. “Athletics has taught me discipline and the value of hard work,” he said. “I know that I can achieve things by putting in the work.” Whether it is early-morning practice or extra time on his serve, he believes the habits he is forming now will serve him in college and in his career.
Sparks also values the team atmosphere that comes with playing for Carl Albert. Even in an individual sport, he said the Titans rely on each other for energy, support and accountability throughout long tournament days. “Being a member of the team gives me friends to encourage and support on and off the court,” Sparks said. That connection makes the bus rides, practices and tight matches more meaningful.
When he thinks back on his favorite tennis memories, Sparks does not single out one stage or one trophy. Instead, he said his best moments come from surviving pressure situations and closing out tight contests. “I don’t have a specific memory, but I always enjoy winning close matches,” he said. This season, he is especially looking forward to facing the Guthrie Bluejays, a matchup that always seems to bring out his competitive side.
Before each match, Sparks keeps his routine simple. Rather than overthinking, he focuses on staying calm and trusting the hours he has already invested. “Pre-game, I try to just relax and trust the practice that I’ve put in,” he said. Away from tennis, he unwinds by going to the gym, watching TV, spending time with friends and occasionally reading.
When he is not working on his own game, Sparks is quick to recognize the talent around him. He points to teammate Brandon Rodgers as another Titan worth watching as the season unfolds. Together, players like Sparks and Rodgers give Carl Albert tennis a steady core built on discipline, honesty and a genuine love for competition.
