Emily Boyer is a senior at Carl Albert and plays setter right side for the Lady Titan volleyball team. Boyer recently spoke with VYPE about her senior year, Carl Albert Volleyball, and her plans for the future.
VYPE: What qualities do you think make someone a good teammate or leader?
Emily: I think being coachable is very important for any athlete. Being a positive influence and encouraging others is key to being a leader and a good teammate.
VYPE: When did you first start playing volleyball?
Emily: I started playing in fourth grade at Schwartz Elementary. I started playing competitively in sixth grade.
VYPE: What is your favorite aspect of the sport?
Emily: My favorite aspect of volleyball is that everyone has a job on the court. We can’t succeed without working as a team and I think that is a rally great skill to have and learn.
VYPE: Do you have any goals this year in volleyball, academics or other activities?
Emily: My goal this year would be to return to the state tournament for my fourth consecutive year. I’m so proud to be a part of the team who made history last year as Carl Albert’s and Mid-Del’s first State Runner-Up in volleyball. I also want to enjoy my senior year as a student and have the true high school experiences that many of us have missed due to Covid.
VYPE: Do you have anyone who inspires you or you consider a role model?
Emily: A person who is special in my life is my older sister Abby. She constantly encourages me in everything that I do and she is my biggest cheerleader.
VYPE: Is there a particular game or tournament that you are excited for this season?
Emily: One of the highlights we’ve already experienced was traveling to Lawton Mac to play the #2 ranked team this season. We won our game in five exciting sets. It was great coming out on top of a well played five sets with players who are talented on both sides of the net. I think that game was a real boost for my team.
VYPE: What are your plans after high school?
Emily: I will be playing volleyball at Oklahoma Baptist University. I will be pursuing a degree in Nursing while there. I hope to work with children at a pediatric hospital after I graduate.
